Our trip is on May 21, 2018. Here is what you will need…
Odiorne Point Field Trip Checklistfor Students and Chaperones If you have packed these items, you are ready to go! IN A BACKPACK (Please fit everything in their backpacks):
ON YOUR BODY:
* * * It may be warm in New Boston the morning of the trip, but it is ALWAYS much cooler by the water. We are outside all day, and we do not go to any of the indoor displays. Please be sure to dress warmly! ***Chaperones, these are the things you will want to bring as well. ***The children will need to be picked up at the school promptly at 3:30 P.M. Spring is upon us! That means lots of changes in first grade. We are doing more work independently at school. We are also doing lots of work with friendships and social interactions. Being a good friend is hard work! We have started to read some fantastic stories about friendship and how to be kind and inclusive to all of our friends. We will spend a good deal of time on this between now and the end of the year.
We have reached our last units in math and reading. We are doing a TON of fact strategy review in math, and in reading we are continuing to work on our comprehension and spelling strategies while reading about friendship and teamwork, which is what Unit 6 in Wonders is all about. Science is going to get super exciting from now until the end of the year! We are busy learning about tide pools currently, and will begin learning again about life cycles as we talk about chicks and hatching eggs! See "What's Happening with the Shadow Sharks" for more info on what we are doing in each subject. Many mornings right are now are still cool, with the afternoon warming up quite a bit. It is a good idea to send your child with a sweatshirt, as it is sometimes still chilly in the morning for recess. It may also be a good idea to send a water bottle to school. I give the students breaks for water during transitions, especially when it's hot. If you would like your child to wear bug spray or sun screen while out on the playground, this can be applied before coming to school. We are not able to apply any of these items at school. As always, if you ever have any questions about what we are doing at school, please feel free to send me an email. I hope you are enjoying the coming warm weather! Mrs. Grandmaison Hello Everyone!
It's conference time! Here is the link to the Sign-Up Genius page where you can sign up for a time slot to meet with me. I look forward to seeing you all! www.SignUpGenius.com/go/30E0E45A5A828A7FD0-parentteacher Mrs. Grandmaison Tomorrow, Friday October 20th, is the Michaelmas Fair. This is a 3rd Grade Fundraiser to help raise funds for their field trips. Third grade students and their families make crafts and sell them at the Michaelmas Fair. Prices range from 50 cents to $5. You can send money in with your child tomorrow if he or she would like to purchase items at the fair. We will be attending from 8:45-9:00. If you would like to join us for that time in the morning, we would be happy to have you come for a visit! Have a great night!
Mrs. Grandmaison We have other exciting news! Our last Monarch butterfly has emerged from its chrysalis, and we set it free today along with lots of goodbyes and well wishes for a safe migration. We are now anxiously awaiting the growth of our Painted Lady caterpillars, which have all changed into chrysalises! Stay tuned!
Happy Friday Everyone! I have discovered the past few weeks that many of us have a difficult time with shoe-tying! I spend lots of time with those shoe laces. It is a great thing to begin practicing at home! Just 10 minutes a day of practice will make a huge difference. Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Grandmaison Hello everyone! Thank you so much to everyone who ventured out last night to hear me give my First Grade Run-Down. It was so nice to see many of you again! I just wanted to review and highlight a couple of things that I touched on last night...
Class Dojo I loved telling you all about how the Dojo works. The kids LOVE it. You also now know what it takes to end up losing a point in the Dojo. We have been working very hard the past few weeks talking about using mistakes as learning opportunities. I believe that losing a Dojo point is one of those opportunities for reflection and growth. For the most part, the loss of a point is consequence enough for students at school. Those points are very important to them. So, if you happen to notice your child lost a point during the day, I encourage you to use it as a positive conversation starter to talk about how he or she could learn from that mistake made at school. This is a great positive way to support your child, while also acknowledging that he or she made a mistake but that it's OK because it happens to the best of us. I want the students to feel comfortable getting it wrong sometimes to give them opportunities to grow. If there is ever a time where the loss of Dojo points becomes a pattern, you will most certainly hear from me so we can talk and problem solve together. Otherwise, use those Dojo losses as an opportunity to learn at home and at school! Birthday Celebrations This note was in the handout you took home, but I neglected to mention it out loud and wanted to make sure I said something about it here. We believe birthdays are very special for our students. However, to be sure we are avoiding any possibility of allergens spreading we are asking that there be no food treats brought in for birthdays in First Grade. We celebrate together at school with a birthday crown and a special little something to take home. If your child would still like to bring something in to share with the class for a birthday, non-food items such as pencils, stickers, erasers, etc. are always a great option and the kids love them! If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you again for stopping in last night. I really appreciate it. Thank you for all that you do! Mrs. Grandmaison We have been super busy First Graders! We spent the first week learning all about what it means to be a First Grade Student at New Boston Central School. We read stories about being kind, being a good friend, and being a good listener. We talked about personal space and how to use expected behavior in the classroom. We also spent lots of time team building and learning about each other.
The beginning of this week has brought us our first week of first grade curriculum. We have started both reading (Wonders) and math (Everyday Math). In reading, we will be spending a few weeks reviewing our handwriting and letter sounds, practice blending words, and review many sight words. We are also practicing our phonemic awareness and phonics skills. Both the reading team and I will also be working on assessing the students so we can meet the students where they are and build from there. In math, we are working on our number sense. The students have been practicing estimating and counting collections of things in order to see grouping patterns. We have been having a great time learning some new math games to help us practice our counting and adding skills! We also have something exciting happening in our classroom! We have two monarch caterpillars that have formed chrysalises and we are anxiously awaiting for them to grow and come out as butterflies! We will also begin discussing what makes an insect and their life cycles. If you every have any questions about what we are doing at school, please feel free to reach out and give me a call or send me an email. Happy Fall! Our first day of school is coming up fast! I can't wait to see all of those smiling faces on September 5th. Please remember to have your child wear layers. It can be cool in the morning, but it will warm up later. We go out to recess in the morning when the air is still a bit cool, so a sweatshirt may be a good idea!
Please remember to label EVERYTHING. Water bottles, coats, lunch boxes, etc. If there is a last name we will be able to track down the owner much easier. Your child will need to pack a snack. We break for snack at about 9:15, followed by morning recess. It is also important to have a conversation with your child about what he or she is doing for lunch, or if a milk needs to be ordered for lunch or snack. I check in with each child in the morning and ask what they will be doing for lunch. Any important forms or work completed will come home in your child's homework folder. Please send the folder to school each day after taking out work/forms that were sent home. Notes for afternoon plans and lunch money can also be sent to school in this folder. I check them each morning. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns! I am looking forward to a great first day. Mrs. Grandmaison |
